The Truth About Why Shoulder Pain Lasts Longer Than It Should

Is your shoulder gradually losing mobility, and becoming weaker and more painful? Have you found it hard to get a good night’s sleep or lift heavy objects? If so, there’s a good chance your shoulder is injured, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop doing those things forever.

Shoulder Pain Exercises

It likely will not come as a shock to you that we live in a society that is obsessed with “quick-fixes” when it comes to medicine. This can be an amazing approach for certain cases, but the results are often short-term, and surgery and pills are not always the best option

The biggest reason shoulder pain lasts longer than it should is that these quick-fixes don’t actually solve the root cause of shoulder pain. This leads to temporary pain relief and the pain eventually comes back or gets worse until you have a full rotator cuff tear and need surgery.

The best way to avoid this is to first get an accurate diagnosis of where your symptoms are coming from. There are 6 different sources for pain when it comes to your shoulder area.

  • Rotator Cuff Tears or other muscular tears
  • Labral Tears
  • Impingement of the muscles or bursa
  • Instability
  • Nerve pain coming from your neck
  • Joint pain coming from your neck

The good news is that you don’t need x-rays or MRI’s to get an accurate diagnosis. Most of the time a Discovery Visit with one of our specialists can reveal the source of your pain. To apply for one of these visits, simply click the button below and fill out the form on the next page.

Will My Shoulder Heal on Its’ Own?

There are a few situations where shoulder pain will heal on its own. As a general rule, if you’ve had it for longer than 1-2 weeks and it’s not getting better, then it’s not likely to heal on its own.

The reason for this is that most shoulder pain is degenerative. For example, if you have a rotator cuff tear, it is unlikely that it happened overnight. Rotator cuff tears happen over a long period of time. The muscle slowly gets torn until one day it’s bad enough to give you pain and make you lose strength.

The good news is that degeneration does not mean forever. You can find the root cause of your shoulder pain and fix it so that it stops. This will also prevent it from coming back easily. Shoulder Pain And Physical Therapy

The best way to get your shoulder back to its original mobile, pain free state so that you can sleep through the night and lift whatever you want is to intervene with a progressive, customised program that addresses both the pain, and the root cause.

Can other methods such as chiropractic and acupuncture be helpful? Absolutely, but the issue with them is that they only offer a short-term solution that doesn’t get to the root cause of what has caused a tight joint or muscle. The root cause is movement dysfunction. One of the most important parts of what we do at DPT is our prescription of a home exercise program, which is the long-term solution to keeping your shoulder healthy, mobile, and strong. We put an emphasis on teaching YOU the techniques you need to keep your body healthy.

By now you may be asking yourself: “What Makes You Different From Other PT’s?”

You may have been told by a friend or family member, that they felt like their time was wasted at PT. In fact, only 30% of people finish their plans at your typical PT clinic, while over 90% of people at our clinic do. Here’s what you’ll find at other clinics:

  • At your typical clinic you’ll find them using hotpacks, cold packs, ultrasound, estim, or other forms of passive treatment
  • You may or may not receive hands on therapy.
  • You will likely work with an aide or technician instead of the doctor.
  • They may ask you to come 3 times a week and spend up to an hour and a half there each time.
  • You’ll likely get a very long list of exercises that are a shotgun approach.

Here’s what you’ll find at DPT:

  • A customized treatment plan with only the exercises that will get your specific case better.
  • Identification of the root cause of your issue, and a detailed explanation about what’s going on and how to fix it.
  • The entire session is 1-on-1 with your doctor for 1 hour, no aides or technicians.
  • We have over a 90% success rate with cases of all types.
  • We use hands on therapy and strength training as our primary interventions. We believe in correcting your movement dysfunction, that way you get results that last.
