If you’re still not sure if what you’ve got is Sciatica, these questions may help.

Have you found yourself unable to sit or stand for more than a few minutes without pain in your hip or thigh?

Have you had discomfort start to creep from your back all the way down to your knee or foot?

If any of this sounds familiar, you may have some form of sciatica.

If You’ve Tried To Get Treatment Before, And It Just Keeps Coming Back, Here Is Why That Happens

sciatica

In the picture above, the yellow cord you see running down the leg is called your sciatic nerve. It is responsible for delivering commands from your brain to your legs so that you can move. It is also responsible for relaying information from your body to the brain about pain in the leg.

Imagine the sciatic nerve like a freeway in your city. To get on the freeway, you need to use an on-ramp. Similar to the freeway, the sciatic nerve has multiple “on-ramps” called “nerve roots.” If there is an accident on the freeway near one of the on-ramps – traffic occurs. To successfully clear the traffic, the first responders to the accident need to know where exactly the accident has taken place. It wouldn’t do them much good to go to the wrong on-ramp would it?

In similar fashion, when you have pain in your sciatic nerve (this is the traffic), the first step should be to find out were exactly the accident, or trauma is.

Step 1: Find The Accident

Your doctor may have been able to help you pinpoint where the pain is coming from. This could be in one of the nerve roots (the on-ramps) or the main nerve (the freeway). They can help you clear the pain by decreasing the stress on your nerve at this point. This may be in the form of an injection, specific stretches, or something of that sort.

The Problem: This is where most doctors stop.

Let’s say that over time, in your town, the freeway keeps getting jammed in the same place. And the accidents (i.e. your pain) keep happening. The people in the city may become aggravated and petition that the city do something about it. In order to successfully fix the problem, the city needs to identify why it keeps happening.

In the case of your body, it would require a doctor that could identify exactly what was leading to the pinched nerve. For a long time in medicine, this was thought to be where an MRI could save the day. The problem with the MRI is it will simply tell you the tissue that might be contacting the nerve. In other words, it would simply tell you which on-ramp the accident is happening at. It would not tell you anything about the flow of traffic. An MRI might suggest that you simply widen the freeway. This will result in a short term result, that will likely be less effective as the population grows.

In order to find out why the issue keeps happening, you must know how the body is moving in order to make that issue occur. Or in other words, how traffic is flowing. If the solution is simply to put a light at each on-ramp, how silly would it be to waste all that money on widening the freeway?

Similarly, if the movement of the body can be corrected to no longer cause the issue, how silly would it be to get surgery?

The issue with a lot of exercise programs for sciatica is that they focus on relieving the symptoms – but will likely leave you feeling like you need to do them over and over again. If you’re interested in some exercises to start relieving the symptoms we do have a post on that topic, but please know it will likely not fix the root cause.

Here’s What To Do Next About Your Sciatica

Step 1: Decide to take action – the longer you wait, the worse sciatica tends to get. It’s like clearing up the accident right away vs. waiting for traffic to build up for hours. It takes a lot longer if you wait.

Step 2: Contact an expert who can help you identify the true cause.

If you work with an expert, chances are your life will look quite different.

  • You will be able to walk, stand, or sit as long as you choose, without always thinking about that gnawing pain.
  • You will be able to focus on the people and conversations you’re having, more than your pain.
  • You will be able to confidently say yes, when friends invite you out to do activities.

Step 2: Identify The True Cause Of The Accident

In order to stop sciatica from coming back again and again, the incorrect movement must be identified.

Step 3: Fix The Movement, Not The Symptom

The only way to stop a problem from occurring again and again is to fix the root cause. Without proper identification of the root cause, the solution will unfortunately be temporary.
